Orange is one of five hospitals that will receive new and expanded Palliative Units.

Ryan Park, Minister for Health, encourages the community to participate in the design process as this is crucial to ensuring the new Units meet the local community needs.

Orange’s palliative care capacity will increase from two beds to five as a result of funding from State Labor

The Palliative Care Unit is now accepting patients and was officially opened in January this year. The ground floor area at the eastern end of the Orange Base Hospital has two dedicated palliative care beds, with the capacity to extend to four beds if needed.

Orange Push for Palliative members have just become official Palliative Care volunteers at Orange Base Hospital.

A permanent palliative care unit commenced operation on 11 January this year. This Unit opened after a trial palliative care service at Uniting Parkwood.

Following a successful trial at Uniting Parkwood, a palliative care suite will be built at Orange Base Hospital.

Funding has been made available to extend the three month trial, but the push continues to make the service permanent.

During the 2020 Australia Day Ceremony at Cook Park, Orange Push For Palliative won the Community Group of the Year Award, its second award on this national day of celebration. The group secured a four-bed palliative care trial last year.

Five years of advocacy and lobbying on behalf of the Orange Push for Palliative community group has achieved a great outcome.

The Orange Society of Model Engineers is holding a Charity Public Running Day at Matthews Park (corner of Moulder and Anson Streets), with all proceeds of the day going to Orange Push for Palliative.

A community garden for the residents of Parkwood, and Palliative care patients and their families, is being developed in a shared partnership with Orange Rotary North, Parkwood Uniting , OP4P and Orange City Council.

Jenny Hazelton, President of Orange Push for Palliative, said: “I’m really thrilled that at last we have a really wonderful option for end-of-life care and we will continue advocating. We are not done yet.”

Orange residents have donated a number of items in support of the city’s new palliative care facility at Uniting Parkwood.

Nikki Johnston, based at Calvary Health Care’s Clare Holland House, took out the award on April 9. Her ‘INSPIRED’ project targets integration of specialist palliative care into residential aged care.

On Friday night, amidst some pretty stormy weather, the Art Exhibition “The Eclectic Life” was opened by OP4P’s President Jenny Hazelton. Well known local artists Joy Engelman and Josephine Jagger-Manners put on a beautiful exhibition and had worked hard for many months to make the exhibition a reality. We were all thrilled with the turnout, with over 100 people attending.
